Welcome to the NFL Playoffs in 2023!
The Seattle Seahawks (9-8) advanced to the postseason with an overtime win over the Los Angeles Rams on the final day of the regular season, followed by a Detroit Lions victory over the Green Bay Packers. Following that is a three-game series with the San Francisco 49ers (13-4), NFC West champions and regular-season winners over the Seahawks on both occasions. The 49ers never had a problem in either game, holding leads in every quarter and never surrendering them.
This will be third-string quarterback and rookie sensation Brock Purdy’s playoff debut (obviously), as he attempts to become the first rookie quarterback to win a playoff game since Russell Wilson against Washington in 2012. With extremely rainy and windy conditions expected in Santa Clara, don’t be surprised if Kyle Shanahan relies on his running game, led by Christian McCaffrey and Elijah Mitchell… perhaps with a little Deebo Samuel thrown in for good measure.
The 49ers have all of their offensive skill position stars, and Seattle will have to do everything they can to slow them down. Seattle’s offense has struggled to score against the top defense in terms of DVOA and points allowed, but the rushing attack has improved in recent weeks as Geno Smith’s numbers have dwindled. The offensive line is tasked with stopping San Francisco’s feared defensive front and ensuring Geno’s first playoff start isn’t one in which he’s under constant pressure.
If the Seahawks win, they will play the Philadelphia Eagles the following weekend. If the 49ers win, they will play another Divisional Round playoff game at home.
