Holder: After his performance against the Jaguars, Jameis Winston will be named the Saints’ starting quarterback.

NEW ORLEANS — On Monday night, the world watched as Drew Brees’ replacement was crowned.
When the Green Bay Packers visit New Orleans in Week 1, Jameis Winston will be the starting quarterback. If not…well, there is no “if not” scenario. There was never a point this offseason when I felt Taysom Hill would beat Winston out for the position.
Throughout training camp and the first two preseason games, I’ve been anticipating Winston’s “win the job” moment.
Several Who Dats were perplexed as to why Winston and Hill’s debate remained a debate at all.
Hill gave a viable force to Winston during the preseason version of “Monday Night Football,” but Winston’s dominating performance should push Hill back into the Swiss Army Knife role, which will still serve as a key asset to the offense.Winston detonated during the Saints 23-21 win against the Jags in the preseason version of “Monday Night Football.”
He had a passer rating of 157.5 after completing nine of ten passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns.
Can I say that was reminiscent of Brees?
It had been
Nevertheless, you must consider that this occurred in the first quarter of a preseason game against the NFL’s weakest club last season.

Dan Campbell notices Derrick Barnes and Tom Kennedy on the Lions’ risers and fallers list; is Tim Boyle still QB2?

Preseason football’s goals are to adequately evaluate a roster against live competition and to avoid any potentially devastating injuries.
On both counts, the Lions won in Pittsburgh on Saturday night. Head coach Dan Campbell rested many of his regulars, primarily as a precaution, allowing players vying for second- and third-team spots to face the Steelers starters.
It was nasty for a while, with Detroit falling behind 20-0 at halftime, which could have been much worse. But the Lions rallied in the second half, eventually pulling within 6 points.
Several players stood out for their efforts on the way to the 26-20 loss, both in good and terrible ways.
The second round of preseason risers and fallers is as follows:RisersA.J.
Parker, CBIn this year’s draft guide, Dane Brugler graded the Kansas State product as the 52nd-best cornerback prospect.
Parker had too many “negative drills in run support,” according to the scouting report, but “may be enough to survive in the NFL if he can improve his tackling and physicality.” Parker led the Lions with eight tackles (on 30 defensive reps) in their second preseason game.
At this point, it appears he’ll do more than just “survive” in the NFL; he’s started both games as Detroit’s slot corner, and he doesn’t appear willing to relinquish that role. “A.J., great,” said linebacker Derrick Barnes on Saturday night.
“An undrafted player”

Cam Newton stakes his claim as the Patriots’ No. 1 quarterback in two more games on Friday.

Bill Belichick is expected to take his time revealing whether Cam Newton or Mac Jones will be the Patriots’ starting quarterback, according to Damien Woody.
(0:57) The second full week of preseason play begins on Thursday, the first of five consecutive days of NFL action.
With only two games remaining until the regular season begins, expect to see more starters and familiar names on the field this week.
The New England Patriots traveled to Philadelphia to play the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday, a game in which Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was scratched due to sickness, and the Patriots won.
Two more games begin on Friday, including the season’s first ESPN telecast.
The game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Arizona Cardinals is also a collegiate reunion, with Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes facing off against Kliff Kingsbury, his Texas Tech coach — at least for a series or two.
The majority of the action takes place on Saturday, with ten games scheduled.
The day begins with a matchup between the Buffalo Bills and the Chicago Bears in the afternoon, followed by a matchup between the New York Jets and the Green Bay Packers in the evening.
In real time, Jets rookie quarterback Zach Wilson could be seen fanboying Packers great Aaron Rodgers.
The Houston Texans and Dallas Cowboys face off in Jerry World, while the Las Vegas Raiders (probably the most popular team in Los Angeles) face off against the Los Angeles Rams (who are vying for the title).
Odell Beckham Jr. is a wide receiver who plays for the New York Giants
On Sunday, the New York Giants take on the Cleveland Browns in one of two games, while Trevor Lawrence makes his Monday Night Football debut (kind of) when the Jacksonville Jaguars visit the New Orleans Saints.
Skip to a matchup: NE-PHI NFL preseason Week 2 schedule Thursday’s game Standout performer: Patriots QB Cam Newton: 8 of 9 passing for 103 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT
Newton looked as at ease as he has as a Patriot, albeit against the Eagles’ second-string defense, with his 28-yard touchdown pass to receiver Jakobi Meyers coming after Meyers gave him a hand signal to indicate his intentions before the snap.
From a pre-snap communication aspect, this indicates a quarterback and wide receiver who are at the top of their game.
Nevertheless, in relief, Mac Jones had some memorable highlights, including a 17-play, 91-yard drive that ate up 9:04 of the clock.
Jones completed 13 of 19 passes for 146 yards on four drives.
— Mike Reiss Up next: Giants (6 p.m.)
29) DeVonta Smith, a rookie receiver, made his preseason debut and had two catches for 19 yards on four targets in one half of action.
The fact that Smith moved smoothly and didn’t appear to be hampered by the left MCL sprain that kept him out of practice for two weeks was far more important than the stat line.
On his second grab of the night, he started inside, hit the brakes, and cut back out for a 10-yard reception, exhibiting flashes of his Heisman Trophy-winning prowess.
Smith’s night began with a couple of drops on a pair of poor passes from Joe Flacco (who started in place of an ill Jalen Hurts), but he smoothed out as the game proceeded and sprang open quite routinely.
Overall, it was a good warmup for the regular season opening against the Atlanta Falcons on September 1st.
— Tim McManus Up next: Jets (7:30 p.m.)
27) Friday’s games, 8 p.m., Kansas City at Arizona
8 p.m. ET, ESPN Cincinnati vs. Washington
Saturday’s games: Buffalo at Chicago, 1 p.m. ET, NFL Network
Green Bay Packers at New York Giants, 4:25 p.m. ET, NFL Network
Falcons at Miami, 7 p.m. ET, NFL Network

Ugo Amadi keeps pace as nickel cornerback for the Seahawks; Geno Smith has a terrible night.

LAS VEGAS — In a 20-7 preseason loss to the Raiders on Saturday night, the Seahawks used only a few starters.
This provided sufficient chance for Seattle’s young players to demonstrate their worthiness for a roster place.
Several players did, but others did not. Seattle, like every other NFL team, must trim its roster to 85 players by Tuesday.
Then, on August 1,
It is necessary to reduce the number of players to 80.
The ultimate reduction to 53 active players will take place on August 1st.
On Saturday night, these are the players that raised their stock and those who did not.RisersLB

10 takeaways from the Bengals’ win over the Buccaneers, according to Dehner Jr.

TAMPA, Fla. — Returning on the road and playing real football games was a rewarding experience.
Cincinnati accomplished one of three steps toward being ready for the season opener against Minnesota by defeating the Super Bowl champions 19-14.
Even though the starters didn’t play much and Joe Burrow didn’t play at all in the opener, there was still plenty to watch and learn from.
This was the night for you if you were drafted in 2020 or 2021 and had no NFL experience.
The rookies provided a slew of reasons to cheer.
Here are some of the things I noticed in Tampa that stuck out in the context of the season.1.

Giannis Antetokounmpo leads the Bucks over the Suns to win the NBA title.

Giannis Antetokounmpo drew the attention of NBA luminaries, NFL stars, and fans throughout the country Tuesday night as he led the Bucks to their first NBA title since 1971, defeating the Suns 105-98.
According to ESPN Stats & Info, he became the first player since Shaquille O’Neal in 2001 to score 40 points, ten rebounds, and five blocks in a playoff game.
The forward finished with 50 points, 14 rebounds, and five blocks on the night.
He’s also the seventh player in Finals history to score 50 points.
“Greek Freak is HOOPING!!!!!!!,” LeBron James said. Antetokounmpo scored 20 points in a quarter twice in the series, and the last player to do it in a Finals quarter was Michael Jordan in 1993.
Antetokounmpo skipped to the sidelines, raising his arms in the air, as green and blue streamers dropped around Fiserv Forum.
He became filled with emotion as he placed the “Champions” cap on his head, kneeling down to the floor before sitting in a chair and witnessing the chaos around him.
“I’m a fucking champion! Nobody can say shite to me!” Antetokounmpo stated later on Instagram Live alongside his brother, Thanasis.
“I’ll never leave the squad and the city of Milwaukee until we build the team to a championship quality team,” he tweeted on July 16, 2014. On June 24, 2019, Kobe Bryant tweeted to Antetokounmpo, “My man…
