In a meaningless preseason game, Urban Meyer puts Trevor Lawrence in jeopardy.

During the Jaguars’ preseason game against the Saints, head coach Urban Meyer took a lot of heat for keeping quarterback Trevor Lawrence in harm’s way.
When the Jaguars used the No. 1 overall pick,
They intended to get a generational quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick on Trevor Lawrence.
The most difficult thing would be getting him through his rookie season without injury.
Unfortunately for Jaguars fans, the preseason has already demonstrated Lawrence’s vulnerability.
At this rate, he might not even make it through the season.
Lawrence was thrown around during Monday’s preseason game against the Saints.

While battling to get the offense rolling, he went 14-of-23 for 113 yards.
While Trevor Lawrence’s performance was subpar, NFL Twitter was more concerned about his health if head coach Urban Meyer insisted on keeping him in the game.

Why would you keep him out in the second quarter of a PRESEASON game?
For the past two weeks, OL has been awful.

I appreciate the effort, but this is the last thing Urban Meyer wants Trevor Lawrence doing in a preseason game pic.twitter.com/he7Qmvc6mE — Ethan Cadeaux (@Ethan_Cadeaux) August 24, 2021
He shouldn’t expect anything less than 100% from his young quarterback.
Meyer must recognize that he lacks a functional offensive line capable of protecting his most important weapon.

Given the Jaguars’ roster, it’s possible that he’d be better off not being in the firing line every week.
The former Clemson Tiger will play one more preseason game against the Cowboys to acclimate to the NFL level.
It will become much more real when the Jaguars face the Texans to start the season.

The Jaguars are Urban Meyer’s willing students as he learns how to be an NFL coach.

JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA (AP) —
— Listening to Urban Meyer is all it takes to realize he isn’t your ordinary NFL head coach.
Meyer’s Jaguars training camp practices simply sound different. Consider the dramatic pre-practice speeches, which are sometimes delivered by an assistant coach but are frequently delivered by Meyer himself.
Or consider Meyer’s recent post-stretch speech, which lasted more than five minutes following a particularly intense workout.
Then there are the daily practice reports from Meyer’s chief of staff, Fernando Lovo, which are broadcast on the field over speakers. Meyer hosted his first Winner-Loser day of camp in early August, when every competitive drill was scored individually or for the offense or defense.
Lovo not only announced the winners of each drill, but he also counted down the seconds of each phase and gave instructions to the players on what would happen next.
The Ohio State and University of Florida customs included having a master of ceremonies.
It’s rare for the NFL, where most workouts are a cacophony of music, whistles, and artificial crowd noise. Meyers’ practices are also unique, especially if you follow the former college coach from drill to drill. While it’s not uncommon for a head coach to get hands-on with players to teach a technique, only in Jacksonville will you hear the head coach.
Meyer’s success in his first NFL job, though, will most likely be determined by how well he integrates the habits and motivational techniques he employed to help Florida and Ohio State become national champions with the realities of teaching professional athletes.

Urban Meyer of the Jaguars has a deadline to name either Trevor Lawrence or Gardner Minshew as the starting quarterback.

When Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell say that rookie and first-round draft pick Trevor Lawrence isn’t a certainty to be the team’s starting quarterback over Gardner Minshew when the Jaguars open the regular season against the Houston Texans on Sept. 1, practically no one believes them.
Meyer told reporters on Friday that he’s still talking about the depth chart with Bevell and passing-game coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, and that he thinks he knows when he’ll make his final decision for Week 1.
Meyer told ESPN’s Michael DiRocco, “I do [have a timeline] in my head, but it’s a daily dialogue that the three individuals are having.”
“It could [continue until the last preseason game], but I’d rather not.”
To prevent injury concerns, coaches throughout the NFL are expected to bench their starters that weekend.
Meyer said he’ll select which of his two best quarterbacks will start Monday’s exhibition game against the New Orleans Saints on Saturday.
Meyer appears to be seeking to boost Minshew’s trade market value through a competition that few are taking seriously.
Nevertheless, given that this is the same coach who felt giving Tim Tebow reps at tight end this summer wasn’t a complete waste of time, everyone should think he’s serious about anointing Minshew as the starting quarterback before Labor Day.

The Jaguars’ NFL preseason opening yielded ten observations, including pace of play, WR plurality, Trevor Lawrence, Tim Tebow, and more.

Urban Meyer, a renowned loser as a college coach, knew he’d have to mentally prepare for more defeats as an NFL coach.
It didn’t make Meyer’s offense’s 85-yard first-half total in Saturday’s 23-13 preseason loss to the Browns any easier to watch. What bothered Meyer the most was the offense’s tempo while Trevor Lawrence and Gardner Minshew — the Jaguars’ co-No. 1 wide receivers — were on the field.
We were in the game, but we all know Lawrence is the real starter.
