Joe Schmidt, the Lions’ defensive quarterback and football’s first great middle linebacker, is ranked No. 65 on the NFL 100.

The Athletics’ initiative to select the 100 greatest players in football history is known as the NFL 100.
We’ll reveal new members of the list every day until the season starts, starting with the No.
On Wednesday, September 1st, one player will be crowned.
8.In the spring of 1956, football — at least the defensive middle of it — was irrevocably transformed.
That was the year the Detroit Lions made a complicated four-team deal focused on coach Buddy Parker’s desire to acquire an athletic defensive tackle. Parker was in his sixth season as Lions coach, and had already won two NFL titles.
Even in the 1950s, though, football success was a hardship.
After a terrible three-win season, a once-dominant offense was suddenly muted in 1955, and a promising defense led by 24-year-old outside linebacker Joe Schmidt sorely needed a fresh coat of paint. The deal essentially boiled down to the Lions shipping offensive lineman Dick Stanfel out of town to make place for experienced defensive tackle Ray Krouse of the New York Giants.
Parker had his heart set on Krouse, a 260-pound interior defensive lineman noted for his speed and agility.
Krouse was the final piece of the puzzle in that deal.
Schmidt, the guy who would become renowned as football’s first genuinely exceptional middle linebacker, was the final stage in the strategy. “Schmidt’s mobility eased some of the pressure off the defensive backs on pass coverage,” Parker would explain to the Detroit Free Press years later, before getting right to the point.
“In reality, his style of play was responsible for the development of the zone defense, revolving defenses, and (the) modern defensive look in professional football.

According to sources, Fred Warner and the San Francisco 49ers have agreed to a five-year, $95 million contract extension.

Sources tell ESPN’s Adam Schefter that All-Pro linebacker Frank Warner and the 49ers agreed on a five-year, $95 million agreement on Wednesday that will keep him in San Francisco until 2026.
According to Schefter, Warner, who was entering the final year of his current contract, will receive a guaranteed $40.5 million as part of the agreement.
According to ESPN Stats & Information, the $40.5 million guaranteed is the second-highest guaranteed amount for a non-edge-rushing linebacker in the NFL, behind C.J. Spiller.
The New York Jets have guaranteed Mosley $51 million.
Warner, a former third-round draft pick who was invited to the Pro Bowl for the first time last season after recording 125 tackles and two interceptions, declared earlier this offseason that he wants to be a “Niner for life.”
Warner has 366 tackles since 2018, and is one of only two players in the NFL with at least 250 solo tackles (252) and at least 15 pass breakups (16) in the last three years, alongside Seattle’s Bobby Wagner.

The 49ers and All-Pro LB Fred Warner have agreed to a five-year, $95 million contract deal.

The 49ers and All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner have agreed to a five-year, $95 million contract extension (Twitter link via ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter).
The new contract will keep him in the league through 2026, making him the highest-paid inside linebacker in league history.
Warner, a former BYU third-round pick, was due to enter the free agent pool next spring.
The Niners wouldn’t let him go without a new contract, giving him a huge raise to overtake Bobby Wagner as the league’s highest-paid ILB.
At least, that’s the title he now holds; Darius Leonard of the Indianapolis Colts could dethrone him in the coming weeks.
When questioned about a new deal for Warner in May, head coach Kyle Shanahan responded, “I want to get it done personally.”
“I feel like I’d say the same thing about him as I did about [George] Kittle [last year] when we were talking about it.”
I just think it’ll be a matter of time.
“I understand he isn’t in his free agency year or anything like that, so it isn’t always on my mind.”
But Fred is a guy who I intend to keep around for the rest of my life and who has earned it.
Wagner has a flawless attendance record as a pro, having played 95% of the team’s snaps over the last three seasons.
In 2020, he was named First-Team All-Pro after recording 125 tackles and earning the No. 1 overall grade from Pro Football Focus.
By far the best off-ball linebacker
Warner has always stated that he wants to be a “Niner for life,” and he now has a contract that will cover the majority of his NFL career.

The Chiefs defense, charged with defending a 6-3 lead against the great Joe Namath and the New York Jets, faced its hardest test yet.
The Jets had a first-and-goal at the Chiefs’ 1-yard line after cornerback Emmitt Thomas, a future Hall of Fame inductee, committed a pass interference call in the end zone on receiver George Sauer.
