When the hashtag #eth began to automatically display the Ethiopian flag as the Ethereum’s ‘logo,’ crypto Twitter erupted in laughter.
Given Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey’s fondness for Bitcoin and the fact that Bitcoin has its own Twitter emblem, some speculated that Dorsey was indirectly mocking Ethereum (ETH).
After all, he’s a fervent Bitcoin (BTC) maximalist who has frequently asserted that Bitcoin would become the internet’s native currency and has refused to contemplate buying ETH and other altcoins.
The Twitter and Square creator certainly saw the funny side of things, tweeting “#eth” to his 403,400 followers, who caught the attention of the official Olympics account, which said it was “wonderful to see Jack and the crypto community supporting the #ETH athletes!” Twitter influencer Crypto Cobain also saw the funny side, tweeting “HAHA” to his 403,400 followers and said “this is fantastic.”
Flags of countries competing in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics have been attached to hashtags on the social media site.
The marketing is part of the platform’s ‘hashflags’ campaign for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Curiously, the Twitter CEO used the Ethiopian flag to promote Bitcoin earlier this year, when he retweeted lobbying attempts from a group of Ethiopian-based entrepreneurs nicknamed “Project Mano,” who were pressing their government to consider mining and hodling BTC.
Dorsey appeared at “The BTC Word” this week, with Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Ark Invest CEO Cathie Wood, at a virtual Bitcoin event.
During the event, Dorsey expressed his hope that Bitcoin “creates world peace or helps create world peace,” saying, “We have all these monopolies off balance and the individual doesnt have power, and the amount of cost and distraction that comes from our monetary system today is real and it takes away attention from the bigger concerns.”
