He was also a punishing runner, a skilled blocker, and a player with the talent and instincts to play on both sides of the ball.
Legendary coach Paul Brown claimed in his autobiography that he believed Motley could have been a Hall of Fame-caliber linebacker if the Browns had not utilized him on offense. Giving him the ball, however, worked well for the young Cleveland team, which won AAFC crowns in each of Motley’s first four seasons before winning the NFL title in 1950, the franchise’s first year in the league.
